The landscape, plants and animals

Soetdoring Nature Reserve (including water surface of the Kruger’s drift Dam and Modder River) comprises a total surface area of 7500 ha and is only 45 km from Bloemfontein, which makes it the ideal place to enjoy a family picnic under a canopy of sweet thorn trees.

Angling along the banks of the Modder River is a tranquil and relaxing experience. The reserve also houses a predator park with a separate lion and cheetah camp, not forgetting a paradise place for birdwatchers.

Gemsbok, eland, springbok, blesbok, black wildebeest, zebra and red hartebeest roam the open plains of the reserve. Kudu, waterbuck, common reedbuck and impala find sanctuary in the bush along the riverbanks.

Among the reptiles and smaller mammals, leguan, Cape clawless otter, water mongoose, small spotted genets and African wild cat are other inhabitants of the riverbanks, and tortoises of the grassy plains. The Kruger drift Dam attracts many water birds, white martial, and fish eagles breed in the tall trees near the shore.

Fish species include carp, barbel, yellow fish and mudfish.
