It is a fact that many consumers, if not satisfied with the services they received, still find it difficult to lodge a complaint. This is because they are concerned that the process is complicated, costly, collage WCRD time-consuming, or do not know how to go about it. The concerns are purely because consumers are not informed of their rights and responsibilities, and unethical dealers are aware of this and prey on unsuspecting consumers.

WRCD Celebration was first observed in 1983 for the purpose of creating awareness about consumer rights. 2018 was Moqhaka Municipality consumers’ lucky year as the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA), with its Consumer Protection Office, visited this municipality to enlighten the community about their rights to quality products and services as consumers, as well as their responsibilities. This year’s theme was E-commerce, short for Electronic Commerce.

About 500 people, including community members, honoured the invite and gathered at the Allen Rautenbach hall. Issues discussed under the theme included consumer rights awareness in online shopping, opportunities and challenges created by E-commerce to customers, and risk of online banking and transacting. When giving his speech, MEC for DESTEA Dr Benny Malakoane urged consumers to know and enforce their consumer rights and be consumer wise instead of being consumed.

With the consumer protection office in action to help the community, in the 2016/17 financial year, a total number of 195 cases where successfully resolved with the value of R1, 3 million recovered for consumers. The message that the Consumer Protection Office is spreading is that consumers are protected; that they must exercise their rights and not settle for or even endure poor products or service.

The Consumer Protection Office, is a service by government to promote the basic rights of consumers everywhere. The service is free of charge with dedicated staff to assist consumers
